Aluminized Nextel Fabric - Spacecraft Thermal Management

Since 1985 Dunmore Aerospace has been providing material solutions for the space industry. Our aluminized 3M™ Nextel™ fabric is a space flight proven material used for a variety of spacecraft applications. The material has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is widely used for applications that require high heat resistance. The aluminized side of Nextel fabric provides additional thermal stability given the lower absorptance value.

Spacecraft are exposed to high heat temperatures during the entry and re-entry phase of the mission. Aluminized Nextel fabric acts as a thermal insulator against thermal shock, which takes place when there is a sudden change in temperature. Thermal shock involves thermal expansion and thermal conductivity, which can cause fractures in a structure. Aluminum coated Nextel can mitigate these environmental conditions, ensuring a successful mission.

Since aluminum coated Nextel has excellent strength to weight ratio properties, engineers will use the material when they need high heat resistance and impact protection from MMOD. Aluminized Nextel is commonly used in MLI for satellites and probes to provide MMOD shielding.
