Corona Treatment
Corona Treatment Process
Corona treatment increases the bonding characteristics of a substrate by increasing the surface energy (dyne level). Many plastic films have an inherently low surface energy which effects particle adhesion to the substrate. Corona treatment is the most common surface treatment to increase polymer dyne levels in the converting industry. This is largely because corona treatment can be done economically and at high line speeds.
How Does Corona Treatment Work
Corona treatment is an ionization process created by applying a high frequency current to an electrode array consisting of two electrodes, one of which is dielectric. The result is a discharge that ionizes the space between electrodes, creating a corona atmosphere. As the substrate passes through the gap, the ions generated during this process pass a charge to the lower potential substrate, increasing the dyne level of the passing polymer.
