TPU Coating, Laminating & Metallizing

DUNMORE has 45+ years of processing performance films, foils and fabrics for a wide range of industries and applications. Our experience in handling a variety of thin gauge substrates has strengthened our ability to process difficult to handle substrates. Thermo Plastic Urethanes (TPU) are no exception. DUNMORE can metallized TPU for functional and aesthetic applications, including metallic gold, silver, bronze, pewter and virtually every other metallic color in the spectrum. Moreover, DUNMORE can add additional functionality to the already versatile substrate with a wide range of coating and lamination enhancements including:

  • Antistatic
  • Conductive
  • Printable

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) Film

TPU film is a dynamic substrate that can be customized for a variety of performance applications. TPU’s versatility can, in part, be attributed to the variety of base chemical classes. TPU film can be extruded with polyester, polyether or polycaprolactone. The different base chemical changes the physical performance of the TPU substrate. For example, polyester TPUs provide high resistance to chemical and oils while polyether TPUs offer excellent flexibility and tear resistance. Polycaprolactone TPU substrates are hydrolysis resistant and ideal for applications with prolonged water exposure.

Applications for TPU

The unique performance characteristics also make TPU the preferred base substrate for a variety of performance applications:

TPU Processing Challenges

Essentially, TPU customization begins with the extrusion process. With the end application in mind, the optimal base chemistry is used to manufacture the TPU film. Post extrusion, surface coatings, metallization and lamination can increase the functionality of the material. Surface modification of TPU comes with some processing challenges. TPU is inherently flexible and when attempting to process the film in a roll to roll process, the elongation can be a challenge.

Inherent TPU Film Performance characteristics

TPU is used for many performance applications because of its unique characteristics.

  • Elasticity
  • Elongation
  • High tensile strength
  • Transparency
  • Impact resistance
  • Breathable
  • Water resistance
  • Microbial resistance

DUNMORE can enhance some of the native performance characteristics of the base material, such as:

  • Abrasion resistance
  • Antimicrobial
  • Chemical resistance
  • Weatherability
