Stamet Coated Black Kapton® Film Overview
Stamet coated black Dupont™ Kapton® film (or SBK) is a themal management material constructed of Stamet coating on a carbon-filled polyimide film. It is used as the space-side layer in an MLI blanket and single layer inslation (SLI) for satellite antennas. Stamet black Kapton® film is used for low to high temperature applications that require relatively low solar absorptivity to IR emissivity values, RF transparency, and when you need to bleed away surface charge build up.
Reasons to Choose Stamet Black Kapton® Film
Stamet black Kapton® film utilizes a unique silicon aluminum alloy layer, which provides excellent optical and thermal resistance, RF transparency, and resistance to Atomic Oxygen. The electrically conductive black Kapton® film bleeds away surface static charge buildup that could potentially damage ESD-sensitive instruments and electronics. For this reason, Stamet coated black polyimide film is a preferred space-side blanket layer in charging environments, such as geosynchronous orbits. Since Stamet coated black Kapton® film is RF transparent, it is an excellent thermal insulation material for antennas. Unlike germanium coated black Kapton®, it is impervious to water and does not oxidize in humid environments. The material is easier to store and better suited for corrosive flight environments.
Stamet coated black polyimide is a great choice for:
- Insulation of ESD-sensitive components and antennas
- Environments where oxidization or water intrusion is a concern
- Installations where glint and glare are not huge concerns
