SPACE-GRADE POLYIMIDE TAPE

Kapton® Polyimide Tape for Spaceflight and Ground Applications

Dunmore's Kapton® polyimide tape pairs polyimide film with a space-grade, non-silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive. The tape is flight-proven and operates from -40°C to 125°C at 76.2 µm total thickness with peel strength of at least 25.0 oz/in. Aerospace programs use it anywhere bare Kapton® film would serve but with the speed of an adhesive-backed material: wire harness wrap, MLI blanket closeouts, component tiedowns, and ESD film seaming.

ENGINEERED FOR AEROSPACE

Why engineers choose Dunmore Kapton® tape

01 / NON-SILICONE PSA

A non-silicone adhesive, on purpose.

Silicone adhesives migrate and outgas, contaminating optical surfaces and bond sites. Dunmore's space-grade PSA is acrylic-based and non-silicone, built for vacuum compatibility and low outgassing.

02 / FLIGHT ENVIRONMENT

Survives shear and thermal cycling.

Aerospace tape joints see launch vibration and orbital thermal cycles; the polyimide backing and PSA hold through both, retaining mechanical strength and electrical isolation.

03 / GROUND + FLIGHT

One tape across integration and flight.

The same material handles ground-system jobs — temporary tiedowns, FOD control, test harness wrap — and flight roles such as harness protection and blanket closeouts.

04 / WIRING PROTECTION

ESD protection for wiring.

As harness wrap, the electrically insulative, low-outgassing tape shields wires from abrasion and electrostatic discharge events.

APPLICATIONS

Where is Kapton® tape used?

Wire harness wrap is the leading flight application: the tape protects harnesses from abrasion and ESD events. MLI blanket closeouts seal blanket edges and seams. In integration and test, Ground Systems Engineering crews use it for temporary and permanent tiedowns, FOD control, and thermal radiation sinks. It also seams ESD films into continuous protective surfaces.

FAQ

Kapton® Polyimide Tape FAQ

Is Kapton® tape the same as polyimide tape?

Functionally yes. Polyimide tape is the generic term; Kapton® is DuPont's trademark for the dominant polyimide film brand. Dunmore's tape uses Kapton® film as its backing, so both names describe the same product.

What temperature range does Kapton® tape handle?

Dunmore's space-grade tape operates from -40°C to 125°C. The adhesive sets those limits; polyimide film alone survives a far wider range.

Why does a non-silicone adhesive matter for spacecraft?

Silicone adhesives outgas and migrate under vacuum, depositing contamination on optics, thermal surfaces, and bond sites. A non-silicone acrylic PSA avoids that contamination path.

Is the adhesive conductive?

Dunmore offers polyimide tape with conductive or non-conductive acrylic adhesive.

What is Kapton® tape used for on the ground?

Temporary and permanent tiedowns, FOD control, test-harness wrap, and thermal radiation sinks in integration and test environments.

Does Kapton® tape protect against ESD?

As harness wrap, its electrical insulation shields wiring from electrostatic discharge events, and it seams ESD films into continuous surfaces. For dissipative outer surfaces, see aluminized black Kapton® film.
